The Department of Geography was established in 1927-28 to carryout undergraduate courses in Geography and is the second oldest department in the country after the Department of Geography, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. Gradually postgraduate courses were introduced in the year 1949 becoming the 8th oldest post-graduate department in India. Located in the Science Block of Patna College, Department of Geography has since its inception developed as an Integrated Department with the Department of Geography, Patna College. The Patna College Geographical Society (integrated) has been one of the vibrant units of the department which was established in 1929 to inculcate the interest of geographical understanding and organizing various academic as well as extra-curricular activities by the students. The Department of Geography has been the secretariate of the Association of Geographers, Bihar and Jharkhand (AGBJ) since its inception in 1999. Moreover, the department has been endowed with the Special Assistance Programme by UGC at the level of DRS-I (UGC-SAP-DRS-I) for 5 years (April 2010 to March 2015).
The Department of Geography has been a leading centre for quality education and research in Geography in the Post Independence era. At present, it is one of the oldest departments in the country having a team of scholarly teachers and well-equipped laboratory and a very rich library with more than 12,000 books, journals and magazines.

Teaching and Research Facility

2. GIS & Computer Lab- GIS& Computer Lab has been established recently in the department to facilitate learning of GIS and remote sensing
3. Geography Museum – The department has a Geography Museum which aims to promote geographicalknowledge and research. It consists of globes, maps, atlases, terrain models, instruments and photographs.
4. Surveying Instruments- Thedepartment is equipped with most of the surveying instruments like Theodolites, Dumpy Levels and Plane Tables.
5. Topographical Maps, Satellite Images and Aerial Photographs- Maps and atlases are the backbone of geography. The Department holds one of the best collections of SOI Topographical maps. The Department also has a good collection of aerial photographs and satellite imageries for teaching and research.
6. Departmental Library- The department has good collection of text books, maps, atlases and reference books in geography for teaching and research. In addition, a huge collection of books is present in the University library.
7. Research Seminar: The department has a research seminar for facilitating research students with books and journals and providing congenial environment for doing research work.
