Department of Arabic

Arabic teaching at the college / University level was started when Patna College was established in 1863. The B.A. classes in Patna College were started in 1865. Postgraduate teaching in Arabic was started in Patna College in 1940. Eminent scholars like Prof. Md. Yasin, Maulana Shujaat Ali Khan, Prof. Amir Hasan were associated with the Deptt. Dr Azimuddin Ahmad Ph.D. (Leipzig-Germany), was the head of the department and also Principal of Patna College till his retirement in 1936. Postgraduate teaching in Arabic was introduced in Patna College in 1940, during the headship of Dr A. N. M. Ali Hasan M.A. Ph.D. (London), who retired in 1944. Independent Postgraduate Department and teaching directly under the control of Patna University in 1952. Dr H.M. Quddus was the head of the Department. Dr Syed Ahmad M. A., D. Iitt. (Hellopolis, Egypt), Shah Amin Ahmad Kazimi. Dr F. K. Siddiqui, Dr Shamsuzzoha (Ex vice Chancellor Maulana Mazharul Haque Arabic & Persian University) were the prominent teachers. Some of the alumni of this department have served the cause of Arabic teaching in India and abroad. To name a few Dr S. Habibul Haque after returning from Harvard University was teaching in Durban (South Africa). Prof. Abdul Bari (Ex. Head of Department of Arabic Aligarh Muslim University), Prof. Mohsin Usmani (Ex. Head of Department of Arabic, Central University of English and Foreign languages Hyderabad], and Dr Ather Sher Director of Arabic and Persian Research Institute Patna.
