The department of Political Science was established in 1948. It is one of the oldest departments of Political Science in India. Eminent teachers who headed the department in the past have been Prof. V.K.S. Menon, Prof. P.S. Muhar, Prof. M.V. Pylee, Prof. Prof. P.J. Philips, Prof. Veena Majumdar, Dr T.B. Mukherjee, Dr V.P. Verma, Dr H.N. Agrawal, Dr B.N.Singh, Dr M.N.Jha, Prof. K.S. Lal, Dr Prabhawati Sinha,Dr Kaushal Srivastava, Dr L.N. Sharma and Dr Sumita Choudhary and many others. The department has produced eminent citizens who have contributed in different areas and earned fame. Among them are Mr Yashwant Sinha, Mr Ravishankar Prasad eminent politicians, Educationist Dr Vishwanath Agrawal, Justice Gyansudha Mishra of Supreme Court, administrators Shubhkirti Mazumdar, Anjan Ghose Avik Ghosh, Chandragupta Ashokvardhan, Anand Vardhan and many others who have excelled in different walks of life. Many other students of the department have contributed a lot in the various fields of individual and social life. Prof. Khalid Mirza a faculty of department is presently the Director, Higher Education, Bihar The department has a well-equipped library with nearly 8000 books on political science, texts as well as references.
