Department of Physics

The vision of the department is to address the new and emerging areas of knowledge of theoretical as well as experimental Physics in order to further understanding of the physical world and its application for economic and social benefit. The aims and objectives are: To promote interest, participation and commitment in physics; To support and involve students and researchers to acquire global competence and shape up their careers; Prioritizing research on interdisciplinary areas; To help students develop integrity and objectivity and work with rigor to contribute towards national development; To ensure holistic development of the students, so that they become responsible citizens, help the underprivileged community, have compassion for the nature, concern for the environment and conservation of energy and to promote scientific temperament across the society. The Department of Physics is located in the aesthetically built campus of Patna Science College near the river Ganges. It was established as an independent Post-graduate department in the year 1952 by the Patna University act/statute with Prof. G.P. Dube as its first Head of the Department. Earlier it existed as an integrated Department of Physics of the Patna Science College. It offers post-graduate programs in Physics leading to M.Sc. degree under Semester System and Ph.D. degree. The department is well known for its quality teaching and research. The teaching of Quantum Mechanics was first introduced in Bihar by Prof. H. N. Yadav in this department. The department is also a pioneer in introducing research on LASER spectroscopy and nano-materials in Bihar. A Nanomaterial laboratory was set-up in the Department from a special development grant given by DST, Government of Bihar in 2008. A number of research papers have been published and PhD works completed on nano-ferrites and nano-ferroelectric materials under the supervision of Dr Amarendra Narayan and Prof Dolly Sinha. When IIT was established in Patna in 2007, their PhD scholars used to visit our laboratory for measurement using XRD set up. The department is actively engaged in research in the area of nano-materials including ferroelectric, magnetic and optical properties, Laser Spectroscopy and Chaos and Non-linear dynamics. A number of our students have qualified in NET, GATE and other national level examinations and perusing M.Tech. / PhD program in various IITs, IISER, IISc., and other nationally reputed research institution. The department has also produced a large number of IAS, IPS, central services officials and bankers who rose to top levels in their profession. Many alumni and faculties have worked at top positions in various universities including nine Vice Chancellors, three Pro Vice Chancellors, two Directors of Higher Education, two Chairmen of Bihar School Examination Board, a member of UGC, a member of Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC), Deans, several Principals of reputed colleges and schools and a large number of scientists in various national and international research organizations. Dr Rakesh Kumar Singh was the first research student to complete his PhD on the nano-materials in this dept in 2008. The department is proud of having on its faculty in the past such stalwarts as late Prof. Kamta Prasad, Prof. Shiv Parvati Prasad, Dr B. N. Singh, Prof. G. P. Dube, Prof. L. M. Chatterjee, Prof. M. N.Verma, Dr S. P. Sinha, Dr S. K. Dutta, Dr H. N. Yadav, Dr L. S. Singh, Prof. Shaukin Singh, Prof. Rambhadur Singh, Dr Ojha, Dr S. R. Sirkar, Dr D. N. Roy and Prof. M M Akhtar. Led by Dr H. N. Yadav, this department developed a renowned team of Theoretical Physicists in the initial stages. Dr Rajmani Prasad Sinha and a team of researcher has developed the Spectroscopy laboratory of the Physics Department to include LASER and Plasma experiments leading to conduct research in LASER production and its application. N2 - LASER System, N2 - LASER pumped dye Laser Systems, Vibration isolation table and hologram, study of density variation of liquid (water) using interference technique, study of an arc and N2 - Laser Channel plasma parameters etc. were developed with funding from Bihar Council of Science & Technology (Govt. of Bihar), Uma-Baleshwar Charitable Trust, Patna and the Third World Academy of Science, ITALY. We are proud of the fact that its several alumni and scientists are of international repute including Dr S. S. Jha, the Director of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. The Department has a telescope installed at the roof top. It is being made operational; this telescope was gifted to Dr G.P. Dube by the King of Nepal. The Department conducts special lectures and seminars at regular intervals. For the last one decade the Department has been arranging Nobel lectures under the auspices of “C.V. Raman–Albert Einstein Vyakhyayanmala”. A six-day (8th to 13th August, 2016) National workshop along with lectures was successfully arranged and executed in which more than 70 students actively participated. Its credit goes to the then HOD, Dr Dolly Sinha and Secretary Dr A. Narayan.
